 History Research Help

  • Remember, research takes time. Be patient. Use multiple search terms, try advanced search, try more than one database, ask for help.

History 9

  • Your text book has many links to resources including quizzes, outlines, review questions and terms. If you LOG IN (you can use your mph info), you get extra info on bibliographies, writing and research guides etc.
  • For the brochure assignment about trade routes (Silk, Sand and Sea)be sure to type "silk road" into the MPH library catalog WEBPATH EXPRESS.
  • In the 900s section of the REFERENCE collection, you will find various encyclopedia, atlases and Timelines all in the 900s. Look your topic up in the INDEX or see me for help.
  • Use BRITANNICA ONLINE (right) and be sure to check the INDEX ENTRY for related articles, major references, maps, journals, and video clips.

World History 

  • Find great info on the ZULU wars using ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA (see link on right.) This is a print source! Note, in the articles you will also see links to Magazine and Journal articles. These too are PRINT sources.
  • The 960, 967, 968 sections of the library holds books on African History (use the INDEX for ZULU wars) 
  • Visit amazing World and Ancient history sites (librarian approved: K. Schrock)
  • Browse through dozens of history topics by time period, region etc.
  • Find online encyclopedia, journal articles and online reference books by cliking on Online Databases link (right)
  • Looking for a good website or book? Type your topic into the Library Catalog (Use Key Word search terms to get the most results.)

  • www.shmoop.com has US History and Biography content. Check it out!
  • Check out these best American History websites (K. Schrock)
  • Biographical information for nearly every guest in the APUSH assignment Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, 1607 to 1775 can be found in the Encyclopedia Britannica ONLINE. (see link on right.)
  • SHMOOP has tons of information on US history
  • Use the MPH Library catalog KEYWORD SEARCH to locate books on "Revolutionary War" or "supreme court" or "native Americans" 
  • In the catalog use WEBPATH EXPRESS to find websites on specific topics and people.
  • Use GaleNET, ProQuest & JSTOR from the Online Databases link on right to search scholarly journals - note links to Google Scholar from JSTOR.

AP US (aka "APUSH")

  • Mr. Salter's website & assignments
  • The library has many resources on the Supreme court for LTP 2.
    •  Descriptions of all the Marshall court cases can be found in these REFERENCE books: THE OXFORD COMPANION TO THE SUPREME COURT & AMERICAN JUSTICE (3 vols).
    • For a summary online of each casefrom the Touro Law Center in NYC.
    •  For biographical information and discussion of specific decisions, type JOHN MARSHALL into WEBPATH EXPRESS in the library catalog.
    • Basic information on the structure and procedures of the Supreme Court
    • For more detailed analysis of who writes decisions etc., go to BRITANNICA and type US SUPREME COURT (look for link on left to article on PROCEDURES AND POWER.)
  • Your textbook online, The American Nation, has student resources including end of chapter quizzes, multiple choice questions, T/F, essays and related websites.
  • Another set of quizzes from History.net website
  • Get help creating notecards

MUN - Locating data for MUN papers can be challenging, try these tips:

  • Check out the NEW PROQUEST online (link from DATABASES on right) for 1000s of journal articles from The Economist, US News & World Report, BBC, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, EPA Journal, Journal of Climate, Human Rights Quarterly, Foreign Policy, International Affairs, UN Chronicle, U.S. Department of State Dispatch, National Law Journal, Social Justice and MORE. 
  • UN News Center: http://www.un.org/apps/news/infocus/ 
  • Use Google SCHOLAR and Advanced Search techniques to limit search results by date or subject area.
  • Use Online Databases to search newspapers. You can limit your searches to only New York Times articles. 
  • Find recent country information in an almanac or by searching "world affairs annual upfront" in the NY Times.
  • Find UN statistical data here (use Advanced Search to select specific countries/regions.)
  • The Central Eurasia Project has info on human rights, educational, social and legal reform in the countries of the region: http://www.eurasianet.org/

  • Use the MPH library catalog to locate books on "ANTHROPOLOGY"
  • Be sure to use the Online Databases on the right (especially JSTOR) for scholarly articles on specific topics our books don't cover.
