Friends of the Arts
The Friends of the Arts (FOA) is an MPH parent organization whose primary focus is to work closely with faculty and administration to promote and support all areas of the literary, performing, and visual arts. This is done through programs, workshops, and special events offered to MPH students by local and national artists. The FOA also works to build collaborations with other organizations that benefit youth throughout our community. In 2005 the FOA launched a small grants program for MPH arts faculty who could use a small amount of financial assistance to realize projects of benefit to students that would not otherwise be funded out of the school’s budget. Arts faculty are encouraged to apply. Appropriate forms can be downloaded below: Funding Guidelines and Procedures What benefits do school children gain from arts in education? A US compendium of arts education research studies called Critical Links points to vital links between arts education and academic and social skills in six major areas:
The FOA is proud to be a part of promoting arts in education at MPH. Just a few examples of their work include the coordination and promotion of workshops at the school led by Daniel Hege, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra music director, and Karen Bakke, chair of the Fashion and Design Technology Department at Syracuse University. The FOA will hold its annual benefit concert, Jazzfest, on May 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm, bringing together MPH student jazz musicians and area professional musicians. Last year, this concert raised close to $3,000, which is being used to support the literary, performing, and visual arts programs at the school. Membership to FOA is open to all parents, faculty, and staff who would like to help promote and support the arts in the lives of MPH students and our community.
