Scrapbook: Homecoming 2004

Thursday, October 7
Homecoming Weekend 2004 kicked off on Thursday, October 7 with the Junior Class Bake Sale held on campus. This was only the start to a weekend filled with excitement as the annual golf outing held at Green Lakes State Park Golf Course began later that afternoon. Fourteen golfers, playing a captain and crew format, enjoyed the warm weather, blue skies, and beautiful foliage as they knocked the ball around the challenging course. Carl Jerge (parent of Nicholas Jerge ‘17) and his three colleagues took home the title of Best Foursome with a nine hole score of 30. A special thank you goes to Tyler Cagwin ‘98 and Luke McKenney ‘80 for chairing the event. Back on campus the Girls Varsity Soccer team beat Otselic Valley with a score of 8 – 0. The Girls Varsity Tennis team was also on campus as they crushed Pulaski 6 – 1. Thursday evening ended with dinner at The Brewster Inn enjoyed by the Alumni Association Board of Directors as they prepared for their annual meeting that began Friday, October 8.

While the Board was busy at their annual meeting, excitement filled the air as students participated in a school wide spirit day. Students in Grades Pre-K through 12 were encouraged to dress-down and show their support of MPH by wearing school colors. As the crowd for the Homecoming Boys Varsity Soccer game swelled, on-lookers checked out the banners across the field. The Sophomore Class was declared winners of the Homecoming Banner Contest and will receive a pizza party from the Athletic Booster Club for their winning entry. The crowd was treated to a display of the future soccer talent at MPH as students in the 3/4-Blend played a short game at half time. Both teams scored goals and every participant enjoyed playing. The Boys Varsity Soccer team rolled to an 11-0 victory over Cincinnatus. Immediately following the game, the annual Alumni versus Faculty and Parents game got under way. In what proved to be yet another exciting game, the Parent and Faculty team coached by Scott Sylvester took an early lead, which did not last as Coach Pat Bentley and the Alumni team evened the score just minutes later. With time winding down and light becoming a factor, the Faculty and Parent team was able to score what proved to be the winning goal after some fancy footwork from parent Don McGowan. With Peter “the brick wall” Wozniak in the goal, the final advances of the alumni attack were thwarted.

Beginning at half time the Junior Class served their barbequed delights. The students also sold 50/50-raffle tickets including the winning ticket to faculty member Jim Lawrence. Upon completion of the barbeque the Junior Class then set-up for the Homecoming Weekend dance and counted the ballots to determine who was crowned Homecoming King (Robert Bahia) and Queen (Angie Aziz). Many thanks go to the all the members of the Junior Class for their multiple contributions, which made Homecoming Weekend a huge success. A special thank you is also extended to Raegan Russell for her leadership and guidance of the Junior Class, Matt Vural for his help with Student Council and arranging the dance, and the maintenance staff for their assistance in set-up, preparation, and clean-up.

Saturday, October 9
On Saturday, October 9 MPH hosted a tailgate on the SU Hill attracting a number of alumni and friends that were headed to the SU/Florida State game. While the crowd was small, people appreciated the red and white presence before the Orange took on the Seminoles in a close game. It was a great way to end another successful Homecoming Weekend.
